The Zakiya Dalila Harris Scholarship

Submissions are now closed.

Thanks so much to all the talented writers who have submitted to our Scholarship. Our Scholarship committee is carefully reviewing all of your work now, and we will respond to you on November 1st.

We would like to extend a huge thanks for the generosity of our 2024 Author-in-Residence, Zakiya Dalila Harris, author of the New York Times bestselling novel The Other Black Girl. Zakiya’s donation has allowed us to offer The Zakiya Dalila Harris Scholarship to one Black fiction writer of any gender or identity to one session of our 2025 retreats.

What’s The Zakiya Dalila Harris Scholarship?

Scholarship

All retreat fees covered ($2,797) plus $500 in travel expenses, for a total of $3,297 in aid.

Who is eligible

This scholarship is for one Black fiction writer of any gender or gender identity. You must be over twenty-one by the retreat’s beginning to apply.

Goal of the scholarship

To support and foster the creative life of one Black writer who would be unable to attend the retreat without aid. We believe writers who want to learn more about the publishing industry, connect with other writers, and improve their craft, should have the ability to do so, despite their financial situation. This scholarship will make attendance possible to one writer, and offers a $500 stipend to offset travel expenses.

A message from Zakiya Dalila Harris

“One of the most wonderful things about writing is that you can do it anywhere. But that’s also one of the hardest things about it, too. You know how it goes: you tell yourself, ‘I’ll write in between X and Y.’ Or, ‘I’ll write first thing when I wake up.’ Then something comes up, and suddenly, days have gone by since you’ve written a single sentence.

“That’s why carving out time away from home to focus on your writing is not only useful—it can be essential. As a procrastinator myself, NorCal Writers’ Retreat kept me focused on my writing instead of thinking about trivial Everyday Life Things like what to eat for dinner or breakfast, or how I’m going to get my hands on some coffee. But it also kept me grounded on a wavelength level, too. It’s based in a peaceful, idyllic area rife with natural beauty that feels completely separate from the rest of the world. And it’s filled with other writers who are there for the same reason: they have a passion for writing, and a story they really want to tell.

“The moment I left the NorCal Writers Retreat, I knew I wanted to send another Black writer there—not merely because of the wealth of publishing information that was shared among writers and agents, but also because of the community that grew out of it after just a few days. I feel so fortunate to have been an Author-in-Residence there, and even more grateful to be able to help another Black writer hopefully find their own little slice of heaven and community in Carmel Valley, too.”

Scholarship application details and timeline

Our Scholarship Committee is now reviewing all of the submissions. The scholarship will be rewarded to the writer whose work we feel shows the greatest potential and promise; all genres are encouraged. We will make our decision by November 1st.

Response: November 1st, 2024

If you do not receive the scholarship, you may be accepted into the retreat, though application to the scholarship does not guarantee a space at the retreat. If you would like to keep your application on file to be considered for the retreat, you may do so without reapplying–we will be in touch with you after November 1st to find out your preference. We have additional financial aid beyond this scholarship.

Final decision for retreat acceptance: December 5th, 2024

We look forward to reading your work!

Thanks again and happy writing,
